State of Mind - International

A Different State of Mind

In every genre of music, the artists who maintain the longest careers are often those who develop their music to reach a broad audience yet preserve their own specific sound. At a time when Drum N Bass is more divided by sub-genre than ever, New Zealand’s State of Mind has used what some may see as a downfall to DNB to their advantage. “People get stuck into a pattern of producing one type of sound, as though it’s a different type of music.” they explain, “DNB is already underground enough in the big picture of things, without dividing it up into niche sub-genres like Neuro, Liquid, Jump-Up etc.”

Amon Tobin - Montreal

Every so often, an artist comes along who is extremely unique not only in sound, but in process, thought and execution of ideas. While the so-called accessible artists are busy worrying about what those in the mainstream will merely bob their heads to, these distinctive artists focus on what drives most of us to music in the first place; an inquisitiveness for sound which touches our deepest emotions like nothing else can. This month, MTLDNB.COM is lucky enough to have an exclusive interview with Amon Tobin.

Perpetuum - Decembre 2006

His style is unorthodox by design, but it has a certain synergy and bridges the gap between the classic “Blue Note” era and the more aggressive, “B-Boy” style of DnB that his HORSEMEN affiliates are providing to the masses. Hailing from Norfolk, VA, USA, Perpetuum has already made a name for himself in many DnB circles, even though he has only been producing seriously since 2002.
